3 CRUCIAL Things to Watch in Thunder-Suns Game 4 — Can Phoenix STOP the BLEEDING Against the DOMINANT Defending Champions?
The Oklahoma City Thunder are CIRCLING the field. They are the only team with a double-digit average scoring margin in the first round, having won all three of their games by an average of 20 points. As of Saturday, they have both the No. 1 offense and No. 1 defense in the playoffs, and while the Phoenix Suns are the eighth seed, they are certainly not the weakest team in the field. But the Suns face an early exit in their first-round series with the champions after struggling on both ends of the floor, and Game 4 represents what may be their LAST chance to salvage something from a series that has been thoroughly one-sided.
Here are three things to watch as the Thunder look to close out the sweep in Game 4:
1. Can anyone slow down Shai Gilgeous-Alexander? The reigning MVP TORCHED the Suns in Game 3, scoring a playoff career-high 42 points on 15-of-18 shooting from the field and 11-of-12 at the free throw line. It was a PERFORMANCE for the ages, the kind of dominant showing that leaves defenders looking helpless and coaches searching for answers that do not exist. Gilgeous-Alexander put several defenders on the spot, whether it was the player initially guarding him on a possession or the player who switched after a screen. We cannot expect similar efficiency in Game 4, but the Suns' defensive game plan must start with slowing down the MVP, and through three games, they have shown no ability to do so.
Through the first three games, Gilgeous-Alexander has been double-teamed on 28 percent of his touches, the highest rate among 123 players with at least 50 total touches. The Suns have increasingly doubled up on Gilgeous-Alexander in this series, and the Thunder have made them pay by finding open shooters and cutters. It is a PICK YOUR POISON scenario, and the Suns have been poisoned by both options.
2. Can Devin Booker find his form? The Suns' superstar has not been right the last few weeks, selectively showing full burst on his drives, and he tweaked something around his left foot in Saturday's Game 3 loss. His playoff history is littered with injuries that were never listed on an injury report but that clearly affected his performance, and this latest issue adds another layer of UNCERTAINTY to a situation that was already murky. If Booker cannot be the dominant scorer the Suns need him to be, this series will end on Monday night.
3. Can the Suns match the Thunder's INTENSITY? Oklahoma City has played with the focus and urgency of a team on a mission, while the Suns have often looked like a team that is simply overwhelmed. The Thunder's defensive intensity has been SUFFOCATING, and their offensive execution has been nearly flawless. The Suns need to find a way to match that energy, or Game 4 will be more of the same.
The odds are stacked against the Suns, but that is nothing new for a team that has been counted out before. The question is whether they have one more fight left in them, or whether the Thunder will continue their MARCH toward another championship with yet another dominant performance.
